Painting the people in my life
So… Chris asked for a portrait for his birthday. A tall order since it is impossible to capture the effortless elegance and wide, warm smile of my beautiful husband. Here he is, pictured with a glass “half full rather than half empty” (with bubbles), in his hallmark red T-shirt and next to his favourite flowers. He likes it… hope you do too. It’s impossible to believe he’s 60 but I’m so grateful for the years we have had together.

This image of the One With the Ocean group, based in the US, appeared in The Guardian in November 2021 and I immediately wanted to have a go at rendering it myself. After posting on Instagram the group got in touch along with some of the people in the painting! I had a couple of offers to purchase and finally sold it to a great friend who I have now dubbed Matron of the Arts!
I have a bad habit of wanting to be in control of where the colour goes, which means that watercolour holds many challenges for me. This was an attempt at an A2 watercolour portrait which went horribly wrong in the middle (almost binned it) and then went sort of right again. A good lesson in letting it flow.
I’m exploring the idea of landscape with different media. This time using pastel pencils. I’ve never found it easy to portray landscape with colour but the liquid amber tree in our garden is so gorgeous, I had to try.
I have always been a keen gardener, and the view across and beyond out current garden is magical in all seasons and at all times of day.

Painting for me is all about recording life’s magic moments, like sharing a cup of tea in the garden with my daughter and dogs, talking about love, life and dahlias. This one was painted on a recycled canvas which makes for an interesting texture and a nice depth of paint.
