An iconic photo of my Dad, taken in the Barbara Hepworth garden in St Ives translated into a portrait. A3 Strathmore, ink wash and coloured pencil. He loved geraniums, and anything to do with gardening.

My First Commission
Back in March 2024 I was so happy to get a commission to paint this gorgeous couple who are shortly getting married. This piece is on 9″ x 11″ grey Strathmore with coloured pencils.
Lilo Glow
Another one of those images that pulled me in. Gabi is always a ray of sunshine even when she isn’t on a lilo. This one is A3 acrylic – the first painting to come out of my new Wednesday painting group down in Brighton with the wonderful Denise Harrison.
Sunflower Boy
Snapped on my 60th birthday weekend while visiting the Van Gogh museum. Sunflowers are Chris’s favourite, and he often wears colours in the same palette. A4 ink and coloured pencil on Paint’On grey paper. I’m reliably informed that this counts as ‘fine art’ because I’m referencing Van Gogh!
Molly Lemon and Winnie
Sometimes you see an image on Instagram and it just demands to be painted… this is one of those. And it’s a tribute to Molly and her utterly delightful and exquisite woodcuts. 20 x 20 coloured pencil on Paint’On grey paper.
Famous Faces – Kadeena Cox
Continuing my series of ink and coloured pencil portraits of famous faces completed in 4 hours in preparation for the Portrait Artist of the Year competition. I did a ‘grisaille’ underpainting on this one to emphasise the shadows. A4 ink and coloured pencil on PaintOn Grey paper.
Famous Faces – Leslie Manville
Sharing some of my process. I found this one tricky. A beautiful complexion with a few visible signs of ageing (not many) means you have to tread a find line. Leslie has such a distinctive and humorous mouth and I struggled to capture it. The crayons struggled to create the dark blacks so I usedContinue reading “Famous Faces – Leslie Manville”
Famous Faces – Kwame Kwei-Armah
Practising famous faces while waiting to be rejected for Portrait Artist of the Year 2024! Ink and coloured pencil on Strathmore Grey.
Waiting For the Light
A4 acrylic on canvas board. This is the second in the series of portraits of breast cancer survivors: The Power Portraits. Read on to learn about Anne’s story (yes, Anne number two too!).
On Golden Cap
Fantastic weekend art course at West Dean College with Amy Dury painting from treasured family photographs. This is one of the few images we have of Polly with her paternal grandmother, Joy Waldron. Sitting together up on Golden Cap in the evening sun. I loved painting Joy’s hands holding Polly with such tenderness, and Polly’sContinue reading “On Golden Cap”
